Kishu started in my MBA program as a capstone project, and my team launched it as a startup company in June 2014.
Kishu creates welcome packages in the form of local goods and stories to help hosts using home-sharing platforms, like Airbnb and Vacation Rental By Owner (VRBO), to deliver superior hospitality to guests resulting in increased host ratings.
Kishu is a new way to greet guests. Each package includes a curated collection of local goods and accompanying stories that highlight the hidden gems often only known to locals.
Process & Strategy:
Kishu sits at the intersection of travel and tourism and the hospitality and gifting industries. This enables Kishu to carve a unique position in the market, distinguishing its offering from competitors in each respective industry.
As the founders of Kishu, we wanted to activate curiosity and imagination. By emphasizing activation we aim to inspire the customers to become creative, curious and connected. We adapted a playful and full of life, yet knowledgeable and caring brand voice because we believe everybody deserves a thoughtful and warm welcoming when they are far away from their home.
After establishing the brand voice, our key messages and strategies as a team, I designed the brand identity, packaging and all the communication pieces based on our company values.
We named our company Kishu which is a mini-mandarin that fits into the palm of your hand. This delightful treat represents hospitality and a gesture of giving. Our brand mark directly refers to our company name. A simple sliced mandarin illustration shows four pieces which also serve as pin drops to reflect our mission—evoke adventure through inspiring wayfinding.
The full system of brand applications include package design –a hand-folded origami house-style package that opens flat– , story cards, promotional canvas bags, website design for the guest and partner portals, micro-walking tour with a map and a welcome card.
